How to run a SaaS cancellation survey people actually answer
October 30, 2026 · Written by the New Odyssey team, with AI help.
When a subscriber cancels, your billing platform tells you that they left and when. It doesn't tell you why. A short cancellation survey is the cheapest way to find out, if people answer it.
Ask once, soon after they leave
Send the survey within a day of the cancellation, while the reason is fresh. One message, one link. Don't chase someone who has just left: one follow-up at most.
Keep it to one main question
Ask "What was the main reason you canceled?" with a handful of clear choices and an "Other" option:
- Too expensive.
- Didn't use it enough.
- Hard to set up.
- Missing a feature.
- Technical problems.
- Switching to another product.
- No longer needed.
- Other.
Then add one optional box: "What could we have done better?" Short surveys get answered. Long ones get closed.
Never make it a condition of canceling
Cancellation should work without the survey. Making people answer to leave breeds resentment and careless answers.
Tie each answer to the subscription
A reason means more with context: the plan, how long they stayed and what they paid. A dozen people citing setup problems on your cheapest plan is a different priority from three citing a missing feature on your most expensive one.
Separate the kinds of cancellation
A failed card isn't a decision to leave. Refunds, test accounts and duplicate subscriptions shouldn't get a survey at all. Voluntary and involuntary cancellations need different fixes.
Read the pattern, not the loudest comment
One angry reply is an anecdote. A theme that repeats across many cancellations is a signal. With small numbers, say so: ten responses can point somewhere, but they can't prove anything.
Investigate before you claim a cause
When customers mention a feature, that doesn't prove it caused them to leave. Treat each theme as a place to look, then check the product and your support history.
Where Joinfold will fit
Joinfold will connect to your billing, email a short survey after each cancellation, tie answers to the plan, tenure and lost monthly revenue, and show the themes with the responses behind them in a weekly brief. Joinfold isn't built yet; join the early-access list to be invited as places open.
Questions
When should I send a cancellation survey?
Within a day of the cancellation, while the reason is fresh. Send one message, and at most one follow-up.
Should I offer a discount in the survey?
Keep the survey for learning. Mixing in an offer changes the answers, and people notice.
